I started learning programming since late 90s with following languages :
- Java
- C++
- CGI
- HTM/DHTML
- VB
- ASP
ASP or Microsft's Active Server Pages were interesting to learn . Later in 2003 went to work in a company to develop a ecommerce site. I was not the developer ,but there was a senior developer who came after few days since he studied in Germany.
I asked him about technology to develop the shopping cart from scratch.
He replied PHP. I said why ,he said it was cool and simple. I had suggested ASP since it was a language I worked with.
PHP was different something similar to C++. Later we went to develop a Cigar shopping cart.
I think if we took partners (financial) we could make the 1st Ecommerce store in the country and remain in leading position.
That's a different story.
I developed the databases using MySQL . Back on those days ,you had to know your stuff.
You had to use command line.(MS-DOS). It took me years(25+) to figure out DOS actually belonged to Microsoft.
Maybe the stigma about Microsoft 'stole' idea of Window from Apple. But that turned out to be false and I found out after 20 years!
I have written following in another blog :
- The Apple Story
- The DOS Story

That blog is under technical maintenance. I will post both stories here (with permission) later on.
I had asked senior programmer to teach me PHP. He did not and replied, you know java and C++,right..
you can learn yourself.
His words were so true! I learned PHP by myself.
Many people want to learn PHP. This is not the correct attitude. You have to fix your destination ,you want to become a good programmer or learn PHP? What happens when nobody uses PHP and it becomes an antique.
Then a person would be having learning new languages and would not be confident in programming.
So what is solution or advice of TKS(Tech Know Simply)?
- Make a career plan .--You want to be a good programmer.
- Learn C and C++. Time to spend 1year
- Learn Java 1 year
- Then Learn PHP.
Read our earlier post on being a good programmer.
Youngsters(Teen Agers) wanting to Learn PHP.
There are many teenagers who want to learn PHP. But why? By the time you would be in Middle Age
PHP might not be there.
First Learn above 1-3 then learn PHP if necessary.
Then Read inspiring stories of Famous People into technology:
- Story of Steve Jobs
- Story of Bill Gates
Then Plan what you want to do, in future you might not need to code any more.
